Wood It Is!

It's time for me to jump in here and introduce myself, since my school/studio in North Las Vegas will be hosting the upcoming meeting. I am really looking forward to it, and I hope we can all squeeze into the space!

My shop on Etsy is called Wooditis, which some people think is pronounced like a woodworking disease. My business name is actually Wood It Is! Custom Cabinetry. No wood diseases here, just a passion for building things. I'm a custom furniture builder here in Las Vegas, as well as a ceramic tile maker.

Most of the furniture I build include some aspect of tile - sometimes just a small inlay, but other times, a completely tiled surface.

I've been selling my work for a long time, but only through Etsy for about two years. There wasn't much of a woodworking community here in LV, and I missed that interaction and sharing of ideas, so I started Sin City Woodworkers, a group of wood artisans who meet once a month in my shop. Each meeting includes either a member giving a demonstration of a woodworking technique (like handcut dovetails, gilding, or scroll saw work, as a few examples) or I try to schedule a tool company rep or lumber salesman to come in and show us their latest goodies. The groups is a nice assortment of creative people, and it's open to the public, so every Etsyan is welcome to attend.

Since I taught woodworking for many years back east, I opened a school last year and started teaching woodworking lessons. It's proven amazingly popular here, and almost all of my classes have been filled session after session. At any given time, you'll not only see some of my pieces in progress in the woodshop, but the work of many of my students. Once someone completes the Basic Woodworking class, they are free to come and work during any of the "Open Shop Sessions" I offer, which is quite convenient for people who lack the space to build things at home.

It's turning into a little artist enclave in my shop, and I couldn't be happier. I invite every Etsy artist who is looking for studio space to talk to me about what we can do to help each other.

Finally, most of my furniture pieces are large, and not easily shipped.

So one of things that I sell on Etsy are my Sushi Dinnerware sets. I started making them on a lark, when I couldn't find anything I really liked. I make sushi pretty often, and using cool plates is an added treat. drinking sake from one of my cups is even better!

And now dinnerware sets are one of my best selling items.

Wood and clay? It's all good!

Wow - I've never known anyone who had actually made an entire dining set! That mission style table and chairs are amazing. Love, love, love em. And it's also so cool to see artists who combine different crafts to create a final product like your sushi sets and trays.

which reminds me - have you been to that sushi buffet over the the strip? It's in that posh shopping outlet - can't remember the name of it but it's numm numm nummy!

I've heard about that place from a lot of people, but never been to it. It's on my list!

What amazing, beautiful things!! My grandfather has a passion for all things wood. My computer sits on a cedar desk he made for me when I was 10. I'd love to learn one day! I am happy to hear you offer classes.
