I'm Slightly Askew and I'm New
I'm Margot Jones with Slightly Askew and you all allowed me to join your team. Thanks! I lived in Vegas long ago, graduated from UNLV in 2001, left for 9 years, and just came back with my husband and 2 boys. I'm excited that there's such an active Etsy team here. I've had my shop on Etsy for over a year as a hobby and I love all things leather. I tweet here. I (kind of, sometimes, try to) blog here.
Right now everything in my shop is on sale through Monday night. I'd love to have you stop by. In December I'll be running several different promos for Christmas and I'll tweet about each one.
Thanks again for letting me join the Handmade in Vegas team!

Team Christmas Party Update
Hi Team - our original date for the team party conflicts with the scheduled December Henderson ArtsWalk (Dec. 16th, our team sponsors this event as well) so I've moved the date to Tuesday, Dec. 14th from 7-9. I had to change the location as well and we'll now be meeting at a more NW location, near the 95 and Cheyenne.
I've updated the meetup page here - click here for all the updated details, address and map. It's actually a much better venue for us, it's bigger, easier to access, and has a full bar and restaurant on site for anyone who wants to show up early or get some drinks during our event.
Since this venue can hold up to 80 people, I'd love to encourage everyone to bring a date (or two!) Kids are welcome to attend as well. It's a completely contained meeting room.
I'd love to hear any ideas for possible group crafts we could do at the event while doing the present swap and chowing down. Hopefully something that doesn't require too much skill, supplies are inexpensive, and that we could complete in an evening. Anyone have any ideas?
Can't wait to see everyone! And sorry for another meeting change. These monthly meeting scheduling and locations sometimes get the best of me.

Fresh52 Dec. 19
Fresh52 is having a handmade shopping event on Dec. 19.
http://www.facebook.com/ScrivenersRetreat#!/event.php?eid=157317764310962
I haven't signed up yet, but I'll do it in a couple of days. It's $35 for a booth, and there is a $15 app fee for anyone who hasn't been at one of their shows yet this year. The only caveat is that tents have to be white, so those of us without them tend to go unsheltered, which is probably fine in winter.
Anyone else interested?

Possible Vendor Opp
A member of the Crafter's Guild, Sylvia Neely, is considering organizing a craft event if she can get enough interest - here are the details:
It's a fund raiser craft show for Club Christ Ministries who help at risk students with their homework. The dates are Dec. 3 from 10 - 3 and Dec. 4 from 2:00-5:45. The booth price would probably be $35 and then 10% of your sales has to go to the library. The event will be held at the Rainbow Library on Buffalo and Cheyenne. It would be nice if the vendors can donate something to Club Christ Ministries as well but it is not required.
If you are interested in participating, please contact Sylvia at slneely53@yahoo.com

Welcoming a new arrival

Hello everyone! I know many of you asked me at meetings 'when's the baby due/how much longer?' Well, the wait is over! My husband, son and I welcomed our baby girl, Kaylin Isabelle on November 16th. She was 6lbs 13.9 oz and 19 inches long. Quite a change from her old brother who was born 17.5 months ago and was a 'very healthy' 8lbs 11oz :)
I am recovering from a second C-section at the moment and very, very sore- my first was an emergency after 18.5 hours of natural labor and with our second- she was literally 'stuck' under my ribs and surgical intervention was the only way. Anyways, that's the boring stuff- but she's here now and is a very healthy and may I say BEAUTIFUL little girl :) She will be a week old tomorrow and so far is doing very well and I know her brother looks forward to being able to play with her when she's older.
So the next time I see everyone (hopefully the Christmas party) I will no longer be sporting a basketball under my tummy and should be able to fit back into my jeans!
I wish everyone a happy and fun Thanksgiving for later on this week and I look forward to the Christmas party in December!
-Chase-

Mt. Charleston predicted to be a winter wonderland
This is the year for unlikely weather during craft shows---like the CSN wind storm and the hail up here last August. Tomorrow they are predicting 3-4 inches, which really isn't a big deal. It may snow on Sunday also, but it won't affect us unless it's a major freak storm. I cannot stress enough that you need to get up here by 8am---9am at the absolute latest. Snow brings the tourists up, and traffic can become a nightmare---like Los Angeles in rush hour---I kid you not. I will most likely be there by 7am to see where I'm going to put everyone!!!! Check in with me as soon as you get there. I will be setting my stuff up in the lobby. The events manager is back as of today, so she said she will be there on Sunday. There is a wedding tomorrow night. I hope they take everything down in time for our show. Those of you who were in the August show know what I'm talking about!!!!
Spread the word and come join us, even if you aren't in the show.

Yaaay! You picked me!!!

Oh Hi,
I am Mark.
I just moved here in June and I run ShopNascentCascade. It's a small shop and is my very pride and joy. I make a whole buncha different things, such as furniture, housewares, home decor, jewelery and so on. You can check them out on the above two links.
The reason I am posting is to thank you all for being around and doing what you do and of course to thank you for letting me into your little (not so little:-) circle. I am flattered and I hope to see you at our meetings, fairs and of course on the streets too!
Cheers,

Mt. Charleston is a week from tomorrow
Wow--the Mt. Charleston show is a week from tomorrow. I hope many of you will come to help support the team..
We have 21 vendors---all Handmade in Vegas team members this time--and possibly a 22nd. We will be in the hotel lobby and the Aspen Room.
Signs are up, postcards have been mailed, and the ad was in Thursday's City Life. Sigh---an eighth of a page isn't all that big but it wasn't cheap!!! I know people have seen it because outside vendors are contacting me via our Mt. Charleston web page wanting to be in the show. If you haven't gone there, please do,and join the web page(http://mtcharlestonartsandcraftsfair.webs.com.) I keep it up there all the time, so it's good advertising for our team. There are also some great pictures on it from our August show thanks to Kathy. And, of course, we will most likely have another indoor/outdoor show this summer.

Team Meeting Report
I wanted to give a quick report about our meeting on Tuesday night - we had Eric Bryant be our guest speaker and he was able to answer any and all of our tax/small business start up questions. We've got team members in all stages of set up and it was very helpful to have some definite answers to our questions.
A few main topics of concern were:
Q: How do I know when to turn my hobby into a business and get it licensed?
A: Once you start turning a noticable profit. Keep track of your expenses and once the gains are getting big, go ahead and register with the state for a business license.
Q: If I am a sole proprietorship, what kind of deductions can I make?
A: You can only claim deductions if you are showing a profit. You can deduct the expenses of your home office space and utilities of using that space, millage of driving for business related trips (56 cents per gallon - adds up quickly!) cost of supplies, etc. These would be filled out on the "Schedule C" of your personal tax form. You cannot claim a home office expense if you are set up as a corporation.
Q: If I'm only selling online, not locally, do I still need to license my business?
A: Yes. It's a state/federal requirement that anyone selling online needs to have a licensed business. You don't need a seller's permit necessarily, but do need to register for the $200 business license.
Q: Should I turn my sole proprietorship into a partnership/corporation?
A: But doing so, you can avoid the 13.6% income tax on your earnings. Apply first for a "C-corp" then apply for "S-Corp" status to avoid the tax.
Q: Where do I report my Etsy sales?
A: File a Federal tax return for any online sales
Q: Why get LLC status?
A: It protects your personal assets in case of a lawsuit.
Q: What if I want to hire holiday help or temporary employees?
A: Hire then as contract employees. Get their social security number and have them fill out a 1099 form. This avoids all the legal issues with having full time employees.
Q: What's the worst that can happen if I don't license my business even if I'm making a profit?
A: Both the state and the federal government can fine you from $100 and up depending on how much income you are hiding. Especially for those of us who are selling online, the government is becoming more and more perceptive of how to regulate online commerce. They are even starting to require that all eBay sellers hold a business license. Etsy may soon be required to give all their seller information over as well so it's growing harder and harder to conceal online commerce.
If anyone has other issues that came up and were addressed at the meeting, feel free to add them! Thanks again, Eric. He is available to help our team members with any small business and tax questions. You can reach him at http://mytaxfriend.com/.
Thanks again, Eric

ProPay on the Go
I decided to share this because I didn't know it was possible until today. If you want to use ProPay at a craft show and want to charge the card immediately but you don't have a card scanner, you can go to http://m.propay.com on your phone, sign in, and input the card's information on the next screen. I think this will be helpful for people who do craft shows. I know twice I've had to call my customers when I got home because I forgot to get their ZIP code while they were in my booth.

Holiday Helper
Does anyone know of some resources to find holiday help? I am overwhelmed with orders between two Etsy stores and a handful of other venues (plus the Holiday show at Mt. Charleston). I would really like to get someone to help me with basic sewing (sewing capes is nearly like sewing a pillowcase -- just a little bit more complicated). I wouldn't even know where to look for rates, etc.
Black Grid Wall Available
I just picked up some 5'x2' grid wall panels for $12 each. It's down by Sahara and I-15. http://lasvegas.craigslist.org/for/2048687109.html
The seller's name is Scott, and he's pretty nice. There are a few 6 foot and 4 foot pieces as well. These will look great in your craft booth. You can display almost anything on them.

Look for our ad in CIty Life for the Mt. Charleston Show
Hello everyone. Happy Monday (isn't that an oxymoron?) I just wanted to let you know that there is an 1/8 page ad for our fair in this Thursday's City Life. Since the publication comes out on Thursdays, it's best to do it two weeks in advance. Also, I will be putting up signs throughout the Valley this week. I have addressed and mailed( and---ouch-- my hands really hurt!) over 300 postcards to the homeowners on Mt. Charleston. Most of them live in the Valley!!!
I'm a little nervous because the events coordinator is out sick for several weeks and will probably not be around for our show, but the general manager's wife is handling the details. Maybe she will even do a better job!!!!
We now have 20 vendors. We could probably fit in two more according to the hotel. Anyone who is still interested can contact me at nevadawoods@hotmail.com. Have a great week!!!

My Newest Shop
Well after all these years of knitting and crocheting and just giving my items away. I finally decided to take the plunge and open another Etsy Shop called KathsHats.
I am strictly knitting hat for Adults or Teens or College student sizes.
I have knitted and crocheted for 46 years, WOW!!
Check out, The Bucket Hat and Loop-Dee-Loop hat. Coming soon! Back In Time Hat!
I love working with various yarns. My favorite is wool, bamboo, hand spun yarns.
Recently, I ordered some yarn from a lady who has a farm in Oregon and she has her sheep. She spins the yarn and dyes it.
I love knowing that it comes directly from there and not manufactured yarns! So cool!
Its so wonderful doing business with people on Etsy you can find some great items.
Thanks
Kathy

Hurry, hurry!! Mt. Charleston is filling up
Another vendor just joined us at Mt. Charleston, and another expressed interest this morning. I can squeeze in two more without us being over crowded, but it's less than three weeks away, so if you've been debating whether or not to participate, I suggest you contact me soon.
Now that the elections are over, I am going to start putting up signs around town. If I did it any earlier, no one would have seen them with all the election signs. I'm also mailing off over 300 postcards to homeowners who have houses up here. Many of them live in town. My daughter is working on our newspaper ad, which I want to put in next week's City Life.
Good luck to all of you participating in other shows.
