Las Vegas Crafters Guild

Sarah has asked me to blog about the LVCG. As a new member I don't have a lot of information. Rochelle may be able to give more information as I believe she's been a member for some time and is a past president.

Last night was only my second meeting. I was looking forward to it as there was a talk about craft table displays, an area I am really having trouble with. It did inspire me to really crack down. Bought some CD racks today at Goodwill that should work well, bought a couple of items from Nile Corp (for the last time, if you are considering purchasing from them please ask me about my not happy experience.)

I understand a past meeting had someone showing how to make lampwork beads so I'm VERY sad I miss that as someday I'd really like to learn that. Then again, maybe it's best I not be exposed to that, no time for new crafts and no room for new large items like a kiln.

They have a craft show coming up in June. It's a 2 day event with a central checkout and unless you have jewelry that tends to walk out the door, you only need to work a shift. Due to my work schedule I cannot attend so I haven't paid too much attention to the event. I do believe it is only for members, with booth and table prices being very reasonable. It's located at a church on Sahara and Cimmaron. They are working very hard at getting the word out and getting proper signage. Should be a great show!

The Guild meets the 4th Tuesday of the month (sound familar?) and one must be juried in to join. This can be done by showing up at 6:30 the day of the meeting or emailing pictures to the president, Mary Beth.

This is their website : http://www.lasvegascraftersguild.com/ and they also use Meetup to communicate.

Thanks for all that info! I've been interested in joining, but I don't really know if it's worth it. Are there alot of members?

A few years ago, I went to a glass and bead show at Cashman expecting a craft show. But what I got was an AMAZING industry show for people who make glass beads and stuff. I left that day with a torch, some glass rods, and a 20 minute class in how to make beads. It is SO fun! I haven't been playing much with molten glass since before the girls were born, but I can't wait to start again. You don't even need a kiln if your stuff is small enough. Most of what I made, I gave as gifts, but if I get a chance, I'll post pictures of it for you soon.

Perhaps when you start up again you'd like company ;-)

Is joining the guild worth it? Well I'm too new to say for sure but I thought it was worth a try for $25 and at the time I joined we weren't a team yet. It's already inspired me to get some really craft show worthy displays going, working on that right now. And if I could do their craft shows I'm sure it would be worth it. Pesky job...

I'd love to show you how! It's really so amazing! But, my husband is making me do it in the garage because I burned a hole in our linoleum! Just a little one! ;)

I really think the guild is worth it if you are new to the vegas craft scene. I love going to guild meetings,it is my "adult time" I never get out of the house :) I am serious hardcore craft "business" and at times there is not enough on the business end of things for me,there are a lot of people who make things as a hobby involved with the guild and they don't care about the things I do, but we all go and have fun, get info about shows and whats going on in crafty Vegas. I am doing the guild show next month, I know they are putting a lot of work into the show. I would love to see some of you at a guild meeting :)

Thanks for that, Rochelle! That's really what I was wondering about: the crafters vs. the hobby people. I was briefly a member of some overlapping groups and it seemed like they were just a casual group. But, you're right, it's always better to put yourself out there and learn everything you can.
