Updates on the Mount Charleston Arts and Crafts Fair
We now have about 30 artists and craftsmen committed to the show. Since we opened it up to other guilds, I hear from new people everyday. I have 28 paid participants at this time, and tomorrow is my posted deadline, but since we just opened it up to others, I will accept contracts until July 15. I need to have the number by then so that I can give the Resort a firm accounting.
The first set of flyers and postcards I ordered arrived today. I will be sending some of those out to all of you who have paid and sent me your contracts, along with a receipt for your payment. They are full color and quite nice. PLEASE post and distribute the flyers anywhere you can think to put them.Send the postcards to your customers and friends. Yesterday, I sent in an order for 35 signs to put throughout the Valley. They should be here by the 15th. I will be contacting you to help me distribute them when they come. Banners have also been ordered to put up on the day of the show.
I talked with the events director again today. The space inside is very small, so we won't have more than six or seven people in there. The first seven requests that came in will be put inside. The rest of us will be outside, but remember that it is 30 degrees cooler up here. I just hope it doesn't rain---for all our sakes!!!!
For those of you who requested and paid for a table from the hotel, you can have either a six or eight foot one. They will furnish the linens for it if you let me know. Of course, you can bring your own linens. I do think if you are inside and requested to rent a table, you will have to have a six foot one because of the limited space.
It is very important that all of us spread the word in whatever way we can. Promote yourself!!! Let's make this event a success !!!!Share with friends and family this kids craft for 4th of July

July Team Meeting Information
I'm happy to announce our next team meeting for July. The Arts Factory in the downtown LV arts district has generously offered their bistro patio space to us. It's totally shaded, tons of chairs, table space, and an on-site bar and restaurant. The address is 107 E. Charleston Blvd., LV 89104. There is a free parking lot behind the building.*
I'm hoping we can stick to the 2nd Tuesday of each month for our group meetings, so this next one is scheduled for July 13th, from 7pm to 9pm. As always, the public and potential members are always welcome at our events.
For the July meeting, we'll be discussing local art community resources, holding a raffle, providing a display table for members, and doing a simple group craft and providing the craft materials. If you have insight into a particular area of the local arts community and would like to share your information with the group, please let me know.
As always, raffle donations are appreciated.

1 if you find a good wholesale company share it
2 sometime company's discount for larger orders so get to gather with friends and split an order i have done this and it works check and see if ordering the smaller packages but in larger numbers gets you a bigger discount i found with fire mountain gems if i ordered the small packages it got me to the next level of discount.
3 get your friends and family to help save stuff for you i have everybody save mint tins for me
4 if you don't have enough stock to do a show split a booth with some one who has compatible stuff not only does this cut down on the space rent but it is much easier with 2 people you can take a break
5 take advantage of our group and network use the knowledge that they have and share about supplies what works and what doesn't
6 use the store discount coupons they make a difference i keep mine in the glove box so they are always handy

Posted this one for all of you!
I have a great idea for stimulating as much coverage as possible through my Examiner articles. The better your photos the more coverage, just because people like to look at pictures.
I will write as much as I can if you help me with great photos for personalized articles about your shops. You must be a part of the fair for me to write about you. It is okay if I have already done an article on your shop. We can always focus on you as a local artist.
Read this, and leave a comment at this article in the comments box so I know who you are.

Spotlight on Mizz Shelley
First, Please tell us a little about yourself.
have you ever heard of dahlonega, georgia? didn’t think so - that’s where I grew up and went to college. after school i moved to atlanta, where i lived for the past 12 years prior to moving to vegas last summer. currently i like: working for myself, learning how to play golf, and exploring this crazy city. the only thing I truly dislike is cauliflower. it is disgusting. Your shop Mizzshelley's Vintage finery + findings has some real neat vintage items including jewelry, buttons and hairpins. How did you get started collecting them?
well, that would be my mom’s fault – she raised us on antiquing! to me, vintage buttons are tiny works of art - the amount of detail in some of the older ones is just mind-boggling. A lot of the headbands I make come from vintage fabrics rescued at estate sales – it makes me so happy to save someone’s handiwork from (heaven forbid) the dumpster. i think it’s really important to respect the past, luckily I get to do that through my work.
In this economy it is hard to make ends meet. Do you have any tips for keeping costs down in your business or improving sales?
i recently started blogging about this topic at www.mizzshelley.blogspot.com …i don’t think I would have been in business this long (7+ years) if i didn’t practice what i preach! here are 5 tips off the top of my head:
1. learn how to take good photos. read the boring camera manual. you’ll be glad you did it.
2. don’t think you have to pay someone to do everything for you! the internet is an invaluable tool for finding free ways to make your own photo booth, blog banner, website, etc.
3. don’t be intimidated by your computer – learning new technology can be scary, but it can also be rewarding and save you money.
4. package your products in a way that helps customers understand what it is or why it’s special. if you do craft shows, make your booth eye-catching and your displays effective.
5. focus. believe in what you make and why you make it. that will shine through to your customers!
Is there any advice you wish you would have had prior to starting your own small business? If so, what is it?
try to attend a craft show once before deciding to participate in it. spending alot of money on booth fees, even if it’s only $40 here and there, really adds up at the end of the year (especially if the show wasn’t profitable)! time is money: a saturday spent at a bomb-of-a-show could’ve been a saturday spent making new items or working on your website.

Is there anything else you would like to share with us?
yes! In honor of the anniversary of my first year in vegas, i’d like to have a little contest. there are two ways to enter: 1. post a comment about a mizzshelley.blogspot.com post – be sure to mention handmade in vegas or etsy in your comment (each comment gets you 1 entry) 2. become a follower of my blog (good for one entry).
enter as many times as you’d like! the winner will be drawn from a hat 1 week after this interview is posted, and will receive 1 complimentary item (with free shipping) from my etsy store (http://www.etsy.com/shop/mizzshelley). good luck, fellow las vegans!
Another Handmade Craft Fair Opportunity in November
Here's another opportunity for crafters around the Christmas season without having to break the bank on vendor fees. It's on November 13th at Palace Station Casino and is $65 for an 8' long table. Check out the links below for more information. I'd love to see our team getting out to these events and spreading our handmade awesomeness around Vegas!

Application for Mt. Charleston Craft Fair - Invite Your Friends to Vend!
Here's a link to the application. Please send your completed application to Robi at nevadawoods@hotmail.com. She's trying to get all applications by July 1st.
If you have any friends not on the team who would be interested, please forward the application to them so they can join us on August 8th. Thanks so much - Go Team!
Let's Get Those Contracts in for the Mt. Charleston Fair
Sarah, other team leaders and I decided we are going to let people other than Handmade in Vegas team members participate if they wish to do so. I guess there have been inquiries to this effect. Let's face it: we want this to be a success for all!!! Promoting it is the key to success, and promoting takes money.
This is an awesome place to have an event. It is pretty, cool and there is always lots of traffic in the summer. If it's a success, we can make in annual. If you didn't get a contract for some reason, please let me know. Sometimes e-mails don't go through.
As I receive contracts and checks, I add a link on the website to the vendor's shop. People can go to the links and see what kind of wares we will be selling. Please don't hesitate to go to the website. I am always updating it. Tell others about it. Also, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to e-mail me at nevadawoods@hotmail.com. Once again, the website is:http://mtcharlestonartsandcraftsfair.webs.com

Helping Each Other
Just Posted in my shop! Army greens are hot right now and so is recycling.
I'm very excited about this as i am an avid recycler. This bag is cool and with the new fashion trends of army, marine greens, why not!
Published this one about midnight for ????
I have been averaging near 400 views per day and steady climbing. Trying to make up for the beginning of the year.
I spent no time writing in Chicago the first half of 2010 because I was busy preparing to move. My views were down to a minimal trickle at best. I am talking 2 or 3 per day.
The good news here is I just passed the National and Chicago average FOR THE YEAR. Statistically that means I have been viewed as much as the rest of the arts and crafts Examiners in one month compared to their six months. YIPPEE!
Why, because I love the world of arts and crafts and all the creative people and positive energy.
Now this one I posted late last night, might be the one I wrote about your shop......

Team Meeting this Thursday!
Since I say yes to everything press related, I'm pleased to announce there will be a Handmade In Vegas team event this Thursday at 7:00 pm at Findlay Toyota's upstairs meeting room. The address is 7733 Eastgate Road, in Henderson. Sorry this is another Henderson meeting, but it was the only large, public and free location I could think of at such late notice. I'm hoping to get a great central Las Vegas location for our July meeting - more on that in the monthly newsletter coming next week.
(this picture is from our craft party last week - left to right: carrie from Fresh52, Katie from Peachy and Pip and Melissa from Vegas Henna)
Want to know if I wrote about you today?
Happy Day to all.
Just so you know we are getting a little more attention from the publishers at Examiner.com so don't forget to read and share, read and share.....the repetition drives it home.

helping hands of our team working to promote Handmade
There are 200 + members in this group I am told. I have less than 20 subscribers for these articles. How can I promote Handmade In Vegas without your support? I know you all want to make more money, RIGHT? I really need you to help out by subscribing and sharing the articles with your friends and family. This is a TEAM effort.
For the record I have gotten 4 times the national average in viewers for my personal category. I am doing what I can and doing good, but there is always room for improvement. It only takes a few minutes to look at the articles. If you post comments on the articles and subscribe and share the articles you will be helping each and every one of your team members here at Handmade In Vegas.
Remember we are having a huge event in August? Best thing to do is get this coverage up so we can really promote the heck out of our first event. We want to make a very big turn out for Mt Charleston!!!!!!!! Read and subscribe now
Wishing everyone a happy, productive week ahead.

Call for vendors for June Henderson ArtsWalk
Plan on arriving at 4:30 to set up. We will go until 7:30 or 8, depending on traffic. Please comment if you would like to participate. Remember, this is only the second month they have had crafters at this event and so traffic will probably be slow unless we really do some heavy promoting and let people know we are out there. Spread the word!
Also, this event is open to any crafters - not just our team members - if you have a friend who would like to participate, please have them contact handmadeinvegas@gmail.com asap letting me know they want to vend at ArtsWalk.

Mount Charleston August 8th Art Fair Details
Hello everyone. I just met with Gina, the events coordinator for the Resort at Mount Charleston. They are letting us use the grassy area and terrace that it used for weddings. We can also set up in the indoor events center that leads out to the grassy area if we choose. There are no restrictions on tent sizes and we can stake them into the ground. There is a nice meandering path outside and booths can be set up on both sides. There is a terrace overlooking the canyon where they will sell food and have musical entertainment!!!! It sounds like a great event!!!
For those of you who have contacted me and want to be in the fair, I will be sending out contracts that I will need back by July 1st with the $50 fee. I need a commitment so I can get the licenses, permits and so I can start advertising.
Does anyone have nay ideas for promoting this? I am obviously going to do signs, fliers and (hopefully) ads in the papers.
I will also be checking into the sales tax issue. I'll keep you posted on that.
I have attached a picture of part of the outdoor area we can use.
