Possible Article in CIty Life-need help from you

Hi fellow artisans. I wrote to the arts and entertainment editor at City Life about a possible article about our group and about our first show. He wrote me back asking for more information. No promises about an article, but if we give him something appealing, he will write about us. I need feedback from all of you concerning information that will "hook" him and make him want to write about us. I've already made a list, but I wanted to get feedback from all of you. What is unusual about our group? What satisfaction do you get from belonging? What advantages are there to belonging to a group like this? These are just some things I thought about, but maybe you can think of others. City Life is a sponsor of First Friday and also events like local jazz concerts, so they are interested in promoting the arts. They are an alternative newspaper to the regular newspapers in this town, and they are a free publication. . Let's give him a reason to promote our group.Ideas, everyone? If you want to write to me at my e-mail instead of posting on the blog, you can write to me at nevadawoods@hotmail.com.

How about some of the reasons I give in my Shopping Handmade guide? They are all great reasons to support local artists. Here's the link.

There are details there that tell why to both shop handmade and shop local. It's my little manifesto.

I think the most press-worthy pitch though is to create "self sustaining communities." Especially here in Las Vegas, we see how much our prosperity is dependant on tourist money and how fast we crumble when outsiders aren't spending their money here. If we spent our money on ourselves, our community would be safeguarded against the whims of tourist traffic.

Another great pitch for the feature is to talk about how in the recession a lot of people have taken more creative routes to earning money. Mention how many of the sellers in our group started their shops due to the recession as a way to make up the difference. It's a great picture of the resourcefulness of locals during tough times.

Hope that helps!

I got your "hook" for ya... :)

One thing that makes us stand out is the fact that we save perfectly good stuff from going in the garbage and turn it into art. We are contributing to a greener planet. In doing so, we are helping to make a better quality of life for everyone in our own small way. :)

A good example is those plastic microscope slide boxes we saw at the recent meeting - how many of those are taking up space in a landfill when they could have been used by artists? We now are trying to "rescue" as many as we can for artistic purposes.

Another example is one that I just now discovered and submitted to the group. A local manufacturer of quality granite and marble countertops is throwing away literally TONS of polished beautiful stone - remnants of countertop manufacturing.

Some of this stuff costs hundreds of bucks per square foot. It's a shame to just toss this stuff out, but we Etsy people can take that beautiful stone and make something amazing out of it.

CityLife can point out the fact that local businesses who toss out perfectly usable material can probably reduce their dumpster bills by offering what they have to Etsy people.

We help save the planet and help reduce stress on the environment by keeping good stuff out of the landfills.

Hope this angle is useful... :)
