Baskauta

Hi!

I'm the newest team member, Amy from Baskauta. I was born and raised in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in a small town right on Lake Superior. At 23, I moved to Bowling Green, KY where I lived for nine years with my husband. While there I earned my bachelor’s degree at Western Kentucky University. I've got my B.A. in Anthropology with emphasis in Cultural Resource Management. Basically, I teach others (usually young padawans) about archaeology and the importance of preserving our archaeological heritage.

During my time at Western, and after I graduated, I worked at the Kentucky Library & Museum. I've done work for them in the form of educational day camps, presentations, educational PowerPoint’s, and created traveling trunks. This is where I developed my love for basket weaving. I was putting together a Native American history kit for the Education Dept. Called traveling trunks, we lent them out to local teachers to supplement their curriculum. We wanted to fill the trunk with authentic "artifacts" but found we didn't have the budget. Instead, we created our own reproductions. We needed a basket, so I took a class in April 2007 and made my first basket. I was hooked.

I moved to Nevada just one year ago. My dream job is to be an Education Coordinator for a history museum. While here in Nevada I will be pursuing my Master’s in Public Administration at UNLV, serving as the Treasurer for the Clark County Museum Guild, and now working with Handmade in Vegas.com!

My mission is to share the appreciation, history, tradition, and craft of basket weaving.

I'm so glad to be here!

You can fit basket weaving into all that? Wow - I'm impressed with your back ground.

I love your snowflake in your shop. Might just have to pick one or two up closer to Christmas.

Thanks for introducing yourself, Amy! It must be really fun working with the CC Museum Guild - are you hoping to get on with the Natural History museum locally or is there another museum that is a better fit for you?

I love your baskets! We dont have any other weavers on the team so you're a fun addition :)
