And the winner is...

Staysi of LocaLovesPirate and her amazing Ruffle Reconstructed Plaid Tunic Dress! I just can't believe that you got that great dress out of an old shirt! Awesome!! Congratulations! Your prize? A month-long feature on our blog, a button for your shop/blog/whatever to help you share your win, and a beautiful Mermaid Pendant necklace from Fuzzy Dice Creations!

(The picture of this beautiful dress was supposed to go here. Blogspot "rejects" every picture I try to upload. Does anyone know why?)

Honorable mentions go to Flaky Friend's Miss USA Mutant Upcycle Experiment and Cybelesque's Miniachair Tableau. Everyone did a fabulous job of showing us just how much can be done with the stuff we might throw away. Thank you to everyone who entered this month's contest!!!!!

July's contest theme is Red, White, & Blue. Your entry will have to be red, white, blue, or a combination of those colors. And yes, there can be hints of another color, too, as long as red, white, or blue are the primary colors. Can't wait to see what you come up with!!!

HandmadeinVegas Lending a Helping Hand

For those team members that were not at the last meeting, the team has undertaken a charity project to raise funds for wildlife rescue in the Gulf. In keeping with the wildlife theme, HandmadeinVegas will be folding origami cranes and fish that are made into lapel pins. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the National Wildlife Federation specifically for wildlife rescue resulting from the Gulf oil spill.

Each of the cranes and fish are folded from recycled brown Kraft bags from places such as Starbucks, Macaroni Grill, Olive Garden, REI, etc., making them beautifully Eco-friendly! Team members folded about 100 cranes at the last meeting and will have a folding station, as well as, an assembly station at all team meetings.

Think you can't fold a crane? It's easier than you think with the help of some expert hands-on guidance and printed instructions! Still feel like that's too much of a challenge? Perhaps you can help by attaching the "Helping Hand" symbol or gluing on the tie tack.

If you can't get to a team meeting here are other ways you can help:

1. Collect bags for the project
2. Cut bags into 4" x 4" squares--please use a paper cutter as the squares MUST be precise in order to be folded properly
3. Fold cranes and/or fish on your own time in the comfort of your own home
4. Donate a few tie tacks with clutches
5. Blog, tweet or post to Facebook about the project
6. Purchase and wear an origami pin

If you have bags, folded fish or cranes or any other item you'd like to donate but can't get to a meeting, email me at: islandgirlzjewelry@gmail.com and I will make arrangements to have items picked up. I'm also looking for members willing to serve on a subcommittee to help with national distribution of press kits regarding the project.

A printed card will accompany every pin. Mike Durham from Silver Bull Printing & Graphics has graciously agreed to print the cards at NO COST to the team. You can show your support for Mike's generosity by using his company for your printing needs. He produces a great product at a terrific price--500 business cards for $45 or 1000 business cards for $55! Silver Bull Printing & Graphics is located at 431 Max Court in Henderson, phone number (702)564-5611. Please mention that you are a team member of Marlene's from HandmadeinVegas.

Additionally, Amber Stidham, Director of Strategic Planning for Imagine Marketing of Nevada, has volunteered to prepare and distribute a press release to all major news media outlets in Las Vegas which will include all print, TV and radio outlets--at NO COST to the team. Here is a link to Amber's bio: http://www.imnv.com/team/. Amber will also follow-up weekly with each of her media contacts in order to keep the charity project and HandmadeinVegas on the media's radar. She will be the liaison between the media and the team on this project.

A you can see, we are off to a GREAT start but we need every team member's help and participation to make this a viable project! Here's your chance to make a difference in our world and to promote the HandmadeinVegas team!!

July ArtsWalk Call for Vendors

Just heads up that I'll need your commitment for the July 15 ArtsWalk event in Henderson by this Thursday. This event is open to any handmade vendor so let your crafty friends know about it and they can come and sell next to you.  Email me at sarahflake@gmail.com if you would like to participate on July 15th.

Just a reminder of the details - the vendor fee is only $5. This will get you one six foot table and chair provided by the City of Henderson. If you would like to have a free craft for kids to create and take home at your table, your table is free.

Set up is at 4:30pm at 202 Water St., and the event runs from 5-8pm. You will sign in at our Handmade in Vegas team table when you arrive, and pay your vendor fee (in cash) at that time to me (Sarah Flake). At the end of the event, please check out at our team table and let me know whether you made any sales. If you did make a sale, please pay your sales tax (8.1% of your total sales) to me at that time.

We need to promote the heck out of this.  Please let everyone know this is a great event for kids with tons of free crafts, wandering musicians, and a great time!

Etsy Treasury Featuring Handmade In Vegas Team

Hi everyone! Marti here from HappyBugDesigns. I've created a few Etsy treasuries featuring items from our Handmade In Vegas team. I'm attaching a link as well as a snapshot of the latest treasury I made. Please visit the treasury and click through on each item listed. This will make it "hotter", and will move it up the list. The higher it goes, the more views we will get, which should help the stores in the treasury. Also, the number of comments on a list helps make it "hot". I will try to create one a week. I try to use a theme, and colors seem to be the easiest to do. Please make sure to use colors in your tags and especially use the tag "madeinvegas team". This is the only way your item will end up in the treasury. If you notice, the number of items with our team tag has gone from under 2000 to almost 5000 now. It's great to see that you all are getting your existing items tagged. Also, photos must be well lit and attractive. There are many posts & articles on Etsy with hints on how to ramp up your photography skills. Thanks everyone, and enjoy the fireworks tonight!

June's Recycle/Upcycle Member Contest

The entries are in, and here's what we have for June's Recycled and Upcycled theme. We had quite a wide array of different types of items you can made using materials others would just chuck. Pat yourselves on the back, Recycling Vegas.

Naturally, I am torn between these fantastic entries. Our committee will be debating for a while on these! Recycling is really important to me, and I'm one of those nerds who brings home used paper from work and would love to drive downhill forever for the high mpg. The Contest Committee's voting will end on July 5 when the winner is announced. Happy Independence Day!

Mount Charleston Show Reaching the Limit of Vendors

Hello Fellow Team Members. Happy Independence Day!I finally got mail delivery today after the fire fiasco. There were several checks and contracts in my mail. When we extended the due date for contracts, we didn't even have twenty paid participants. I now have about 35 including the few who are slated inside(very little room in there). I have sent personal e-mails to the three or four vendors who have not yet sent me their contracts and/or fees. I will hold their spaces until Tuesday, but then I will give them away if someone else wants them. I am at the limit if those four pay, so then I will start a waiting list.
As for the flyers, I will be mailing them after the holiday. I am still waiting for the second set. Sorry. You would have them already if the mountain didn't have a forest fire. Enjoy the weekend!!
